About Amber Johns (Please purchase a ticket to help her)

Amber is a native of New Orleans. Her father was an eye doctor and his practice was there. Her parents divorced and she and her mother moved to Mobile around the age of five. She grew up in the D.I.P area. She attended and graduated from Theodore High School. She met her husband her senior year, he attended IMS. They have been together since and married after high school. Amber graduated from South Alabama in 2002 as an education major and a biology minor. She worked for Goodwill Easter Seals, with handicapped children for a time. Not too long after gradaution, Amber became pregnant and soon was mom their her only child, Kayley. Amber was fortunate enought that Brad, her husband who works for Atlantic Marine, was able to support the family and allowed Amber to stay home and raise Kayley. Around December of 2008, Amber went to the doctor complaining of nauseation and a pain in her side. She was then diagnosed with epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE), a rare form of chemo resistant cancer. It was found in her liver and has since moved to her lungs. Amber heard of some treatment she may receive at one of the cancer center of America. When she got the news that her insurance would only pay a small portion and she needed 20,000-40,000 more, she said, "It was like I found out I was dying all over again." That was too much for my heart to take.

I myself met Amber in 1997 as a member of my junior college tennis team. We lost touch over the years and through the grace of Facebook, were able to find each other again just last spring of this year. We as a team, got together for a few dinners here and there and picked up right where we left off as friends. As we all do, I have lost two grandparents to cancer and recently my best friends mother to melanoma. I attended a fund raiser for my friend's mom at the Bluegill back in February. I am a fourth grade teacher myself, and with no experience with fundraising or anything of the sort. I was tired of saying, 'I'll pray for you, or "I'll be thinking about you", or " Let me know if I can do anything" Cancer makes everyone helpless. I wanted to see beyond my own front yard. So, I held my breath as I created the group on Facebook, The Friends of Amber Johns. I winced as I put it out there that I wanted to have a big event like my friend's mom, ( who had tons of friends in the media) I said, "You know Kelly, if you write this, you going have to do it......." So my summer has been countless e-mails, phone calls. letters and planning and planning. I have made it happen, not alone though. It is amazing how may people love this girl. I get calls from people I have never met everyday who want to help. Together we have made this into a huge event that we hope will make a lot of money. I am sick and tired of watching. I want to make something happen, for my friend so she can be a miracle and see her five year old not only finsh kindergarten, but graduate from high school, and college.

"The LowDown Throwdown for Amber" is scheduled for Sunday, August 2nd at 1:00 at Oysterella's on the causeway. There will be a silent auction starting at 1, The LowDown Throwdown, a local band, will begin playing at 2:00. The live auction, hosted by WKRG's Devon Walsh, will begin at 3:30. After the auction, a Fairhope band, The Travis Murray Band will be playing. There are tons of items to bid on, including a four night stay in a cabin in Gatlinburg, a sprinkler system installation, paintings, chartered fishing trips and so much more as well as door prizes. Tickets are $10 and available at Daphne and Fairhope Wachovia's as well as Oysterella's. They will also be available at the door. All proceeds will go to directly to Amber's treatment. There is a fund set up in Amber's name at Wachovia and monetary donations could be made there. The Friends of Amber John's are still looking for donations or services for auction.
